This important natural reserve is home to many protected species and covers more than 2,500 hectares. Our route passes through the esteros (traditional salt pans), an area where human activity and nature coexist in perfect harmony within the Natural Area, creating an ideal sanctuary for birdwatching.
Led by our expert local guide, you will discover the birds and flora that inhabit this protected natural space. The 8-kilometer hike is a 3-hour private tour that takes place over very flat terrain with no difficulty, winding through pine forests and marshes located at the mouth of the Río Piedras, west of El Rompido—an old fishing village and one of the quietest and least crowded spots on Huelva’s Costa de la Luz.
The first part of this figure-eight trail follows a waterfront promenade to the marshes, an area where we can observe many types of birds, especially during low tide. After crossing a wooden bridge, we reach the pine forest as the path follows the edge of the marsh, where traditional salt pans were converted into a fish farm. We then pass by ponds, old peat bogs, and the hill where the lighthouse stands with beautiful views of the estuary, before heading back.
