Our excursion, which blends hiking, urban exploration, and gastronomy, begins in Güejar Sierra with a stroll through the village’s history. During this 45-minute walk, we will discover its mountain and Arabic architecture, ancient souks, and the communal laundries that once served as the heart of local social life. We will also visit the former mosque—now a parish church—and the “Tinaos Alpujarreños” (covered passageways and porches over the public streets). All of this is framed by crystal-clear meltwater springs, natural fountains, and the imposing peaks of Sierra Nevada.
Next, we will stop at one of Güejar’s most historic family businesses, now run by the third generation. They will explain their traditional production methods before we enjoy our first tasting of local cured meats and cheeses, perfectly paired with regional wines.
Afterward, we set off on an easy hiking trail along the path of the old Sierra Nevada Tramway. You will learn the surprising history of this project, which operated from 1925 until its closure in 1974. We will walk alongside the Genil River, filled with fresh meltwater, through groves of chestnut trees. Along the way, we’ll visit old stations—some abandoned, others repurposed as rest areas for travelers. This trail is suitable for all fitness levels and will transport you back in time. We’ll cross hanging bridges, and the bravest among us can even take a dip in the Genil's chilly waters; during the warmer months, we’ll find calm natural pools that offer a refreshing break.
To top off the day and take home another piece of our culinary culture, we will stop at a restaurant along the route for a second tasting. You will enjoy dishes prepared with local produce and livestock from Sierra Nevada, featuring authentic flavors native to Güejar Sierra.
Discover the history, nature, and gastronomy of our village in an engaging and interactive way. A place born among mountains, shaped by history, and the true guardian of the gateway to Sierra Nevada
