Ready to conquer Sierra Nevada's most iconic peak? Leave the bustle behind and prepare for an unforgettable climb within the National Park, leading you to the summit of the Peninsula's third-highest mountain: the majestic Pico Veleta. This is more than just a beautiful hike; it’s the epic feeling of standing on the "Balcony of Andalusia," with views that will truly make you feel like the world is at your feet.
We will meet at the La Hoya de la Mora car park at approximately 2,500 meters, the highest road-accessible starting point. From here, we will take the trail that follows Europe's old highest road, effectively bypassing the significant elevation gain from the valley floor and focusing on the route's most spectacular section.
The ascent: The climb takes around 3 hours via a perfectly marked path, progressively ascending until we reach 3,398 meters. This is a medium-to-high difficulty route with no technical challenges, but it does demand good physical fitness due to the positive elevation gain of around +900 meters and the high altitude. The total hike covers about 12 kilometers, with a total duration of approximately 6 hours round trip. We set out in small groups of a maximum of 12 people to ensure safety and a personalized experience.
The reward: An extraordinary landscape featuring peaks, glacial cirques, and a horizon that melts into the Mediterranean Sea. Every meter gained will make you feel that the effort was worthwhile. We’ll take our time to rest, celebrate, and admire these simply unparalleled vistas. From the summit, you will enjoy a 360-degree viewpoint spanning from the perfect silhouette of Mulhacén (the highest peak) all the way to the distant African coast on clear days.
This route is suitable for hikers with medium-to-high physical condition. If you are accustomed to walking on mountainous terrain and are seeking your first major "three-thousander" (3,000m+ peak), this challenge is for you!
